as of today, the raffin kids music company has closed down.

the three kids will be going on their merry way to pursue their own projects. bianca has already gone overseas for a tennis tournament in london; juan, multi-talented geetar player has branched out into different bands, namely the gyspy jazz kids; and i, jack, am pretty free actually, so i'll just stay in bed. always wanted to finish reading don quixote.

the blog will no longer be updated as there is no more band & the raffin kids youtube channel will still be up in case any "bootlegs" show up.

expect in the future to see the new phase of this music company - the good kids: an eight-piece reggae-rock-surf-jazz-spoken word-carnival rock band. but you'll have to look for that one yerselves.

i burnt a raffin kids CD for someone the other day, and came across this track. i kinda forgot about this one.

i put this one together last year from a whole bunch of weird improv sessions we had. fooling around on keyboards & other instruments that were kicking around.

the abe theme comes from the unstable mind set i was packing when i was thinking this track thru at the time, while taking breaks and reading "we can build you" by philip k dick. if i remember correctly, in that book they make such a perfect android copy of lincoln that it also ends with depression and schizophrenia and wants to die and stuff. ha-ha. also around that time i started digging on bob newhart records:

no new tracks since i'm too busy living what i'll call the bukowski lifestyle of lounging round in my underpants, waking up in the afternoon, and just doing stuff *. that, and getting ready with the band for some kinda birthday gig this saturday.

but anyway, here's this:

what is happiness? (part 1: epicureanism revised)

Astronaut George Taylor had no idea how good he had it on the Planet of the Apes.

Sure, it must have been a real downer to find out what he found out on that planet, and how he was stranded there, and that his other astronaut buddies were dead, and how he was the only talking human on a planet where apes are highly intelligent and superior to human beings (assuming the spot where Taylor & co. landed represented the entire planet, like on Star Trek).

But look where Taylor ends up in Apes 1 and at the start of Apes 2:

That's right. No exaggeration. He was just travelling about on horseback with that awesome babe, Nova. And really, what else was there to do? So, Taylor would be wandering about, living off the land, sitting under the shade of a tree, and getting down with the cave chick. Also Nova was part of the primitive human society on that planet (ie: couldn't talk). So this made things simpler for this guy - no chit-chat, no small talk, no fuss, no muss. Perfect.

If Taylor was aware of how good he had it, he would not have left the new simple life he had, eventually following curiosity, attempting heroics, and later, getting himself killed. So maybe the pre-Socratic guy Epicurus was onto something: maybe Taylor should have just chilled out and lived the Good & Simple life - seeking pleasure, avoiding pain.

And, remember, the planet blows up at the end of Planet of the Apes 2! So when you think about it, after Taylor and Nova see the Statue of Liberty, not much longer after that, it would have all been over. If only Taylor knew all this, he would have stayed with Nova, and done the Epicureanism thang, I'm sure.

But although Epicurus sees pleasure as the most important thing - as in, the modest & simple sense, striving toward living peacefully, and being free from fear and physical pain (as Taylor was kinda doing) - this pre-Socratic said no sex, so, maybe it's not the greatest philosophy out there.

But then, what is happiness? Can we get bored with being happy, with living comfortably? You bet. And it seems we get more disatisfied as we get older. Though Epicureanism states that pleasure was achieved through knowledge (among other stuff), we become more curious about things, about life, and want to get up and know more, and do more, and live more. We feel a need to get out of the hobbit hole. You dig?

If we were just to stay in a comfortable situation, would we have bothered with inventing space flight? Maybe, Taylor & co. never would have gone to the Planet**, nor would have Taylor met Nova.

But then again, was it all worth it? He dies+. She dies. The planet dies...

Same with the apes, who on this planet, act like humans. If they didn't continue in searching, looking for new ways to be satisfied (in this case, satisfying curiosity), they would not have gone to the Forbidden Zone (the desert part), would not have found the mutant humans, the bomb, or have gone to war. But they did. And now everything and everyone is dead.

Taylor could have stayed living in tranquility with Nova, instead of going out and getting shot. But the guy wasn't happy with that.

I think I've gotten somewhere there, living the Good Life; perhaps a modernised version of Epicureanism (ie: tranquility, freedom from Pain & Fear, but with sex and rock 'n' roll)... but how long will it last? (also: who cares?)

the athelete's foot incident

i don't know why i remembered this but i was in new york once - well, twice - but this one time i went into the athelete's foot to buy a pair of sneakers (running shoes, runners, sports shoes, i don't really know what they're called).

now, for the story it's important to note that the store was huge, really full of people and a whole bunch of employees who were, for the most part, black.

and so i picked out a pair of sneakers (or whatever) and the guy who was serving me went out back to see if they had my size and a few minutes later another employee comes up and asks if i'm being taken care of or if i'm being served or whatever the phrase is,
and i say: yeah
and he says: do you know your guy's name?
and i say: nope.
and he says: well, do you know what he looked like?
and i say: um....

and here's the deal, i dunno, how do i describe a black guy to another black guy. should i use the word black or african-american, or what the fuck? i dunno the system i'm not from the US. and they make a big deal out of words and phrases and such.

uh, i dunno, just some regular looking guy, i continue.

can ya describe him, like his hair or something, see if i can get him to hurry up for ya.

the title of this collection comes from a phrase spoken in what frank zappa album?

notes to self:
anyway, i guess the title ends up referring to me. i can't understand where all this music comes from. between march and july i think almost 50 tracks were recorded (including a small handful of tracks that came out of hibernation and found closure). and all i have here with me is an acoustic guitar and a computer. i know being PROLIFIC doesn't make all this music great or anything. but what the hell?

further notes to self:
KY900 variations feature the famous keyboard KY900 model. when i say famous i mean horrible piece of shit. maybe that's why it's famous (to me). this keyboard has to be the worst and most offensively unbearable instrument i've ever heard. and i've heard bagpipes. at least you can make the bagpipe sound work for you (cite: crua chan).
that's why i've tried padding out the painful sounds with some filters here & there. soften the auditory blow, if you can dig it.
the keyboard KY900 is featured on the image above. and yep the colors used are meant to make it look like the argentinian flag. "yo tambien quiero mucho a argentina, aunque nadie me pregunto"....."buenos aires, mi querido", etc, etc.

rug munchin is a reworking of remis (track previously posted). though the horns sound really familiar, like i've stolen it from somewhere. also: remis is the name of a kind of car service used in argentina. it's kind of like phoning a taxi, but not. person talking on the track (remis) is gramma, who was complaining about a remis she took that day.

chekov on the beach pisses me off for two reasons:
1) the part where it's supposed to "kick in" (halfway thru), doesn't. there's a tiny gap in there, fraction of a second. i dunno if it's the rhythm guitar or the drums or what. but it kills the effect.
2) i'm aware of it, but can't be fucked re-recording it.
this track can also been seen as a follow up to the surf-flavored track halfway thru audio
scrapbook 6.

thinking about it, i would like to do an actual faust cantata (as opposed to digging up an old juan&jack-guitar&drums improv recording and giving it a title).
an actual faust piece but to rework it and make it about robert johnson instead. remember also that faust or faustus or whatever-the-fuck was a real guy - a german astronomer & necromancer. and there are all these works of art, plays, books, etc, about him. far out.
or what about a take on faust but with different types of "metal"? as in, first act: heavy metal, second act: thrash metal. third act: death metal. i dunno. what else is there...silly metal? i dunno.

posted here also is the first recording attempt of sunday afternoon. this means nothing to you but these are notes to myself, so... but then again, what is self?

i'd like to think that this one is a bunch of musical ideas based around this episode of the twilight zone.

but what? okay dig:

this track has several instruments all playing the same thing. all from middle C. all following each other, copying each other. they're all conforming, see? yet something in there - a sax or drums or whatever - sometimes tries to break out from the same set of notes and does its own thing. BUT THEN: all the other instruments overwhelm that different sound, that different voice - changes pattern, bringing it all back to a conforming composition. BUT THEN: there's a riot. BUT THEN: all the instruments have been pressed down to the same type, so much so, that all that remains is the same chord, over and over and over again...

damn, what a cop out. but i felt if i didn't write that, no one would get it all. what a fucken cop out... but you know what? maybe none of that is in this track, so whatever.

uh, i think double-tracking the vocals on this one was a hilarious idea since it sounds so flat & dead & bad. haha. also, i must've annoyed everyone in the house while recording the background vocals in the 2nd half of the song. haha. ah, those wacky 5am musical antics.

oh, and who is the girl on the doorstep? bum around the loud & shitty streets of fitzroy, you might see her. she's a good kid/singer/music-maker.
the chick in the picture/clip is kim deal, though, and not the girl in the song, so...yep. i dunno, unless kim's doing a busker bit around brunswick street. that's new to me.
